Fans in San Diego, Los Angeles, and all over the country were told the news that seemed inevitable, but news that still surprised. It was announced on February 10, that 16 year franchise quarterback, Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers, would officially part ways this offseason.
The Chargers had the first pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and stepped up to the podium to select their quarterback of the future and face of the franchise, Eli Manning. Well, that’s what they thought.
After months of speculation, Manning and his camp made it clear that he did not want to play in San Diego, there was no clear reason behind it then, and there is still no clear reason behind it now.
After risking it and drafting him, many did not understand why, until a few moments later. When the New York Giants stepped up to the podium with the fourth overall selection, it was announced that Manning was shipped to New York for that fourth pick. The then San Diego Chargers used that fourth pick on this man.
Want more about Rivers and who he was under the helmet? The video below will help you learn more about him. He is a fun loving, energetic, trash talking king.
Rivers accolades for the Chargers include; 228 games played, 59,000+ yards thrown, 397 touchdowns, 95.1 QBR, NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2013, NFL leader in passing yards in 2010, NFL leader in throwing touchdowns in 2008, eight time Pro Bowler, and durability — Rivers has started every game since September, 2006.
For me, it’s hard not to like him. Being a backup to Drew Brees his first two years, then leading the Chargers to a 14-2 record. Playing the game with passion, love, and leadership. Rivers is the epitome of an NFL player to me.
Although his Chargers’ career is over, his NFL playing days are not. He will officially be a free agent on the leagues new year, March 14th. He will begin negotiations and make a decision on where to play next. My prediction?
The Indianapolis Colts.
