In big, but also less shocking news. Drew Brees has resigned with the New Orleans Saints.
The contract is 2-years $50 million. Brees gets a pay day and as Ian Rapoport said, he took a “pay-cut” to help the team.
I wish agreeing to this type of deal was “taking less” for me.
It was obvious that Brees would be coming back. His other options were leaving for another team, or retirement. I think he would have rather left then retire.
The Saints options included bringing back one of their three free agents, Brees, Teddy Bridgewater, or Taysom Hill. It was obvious they would keep one of the three, and the clear option being Brees, but they could have also went out of house and signed someone, but no chance that was happening.
After the Panthers announced they were trying to move Cam Newton, they quickly signed Bridgewater to a 3-year deal, so Bridgewater was off the table.
The utility man / quarterback, Hill, is still a free agent and wants to be a starter, but I could easily see the Saints bringing him back. I do not believe Hill will get a starting opportunity anywhere else, and he fits so well for Sean Payton and his system.
Brees is officially back in black and gold, and will most likely finish his career in the super dome. He has two more years to get one more Lombardi trophy, it’ll be fun to watch him and the team try to accomplish that.
