AFC North:
Game 1:
Immaculate reception vs. The Fumble in 1988 AFC Championship Game.
Winner — Immaculate Reception
One of the greatest moments in NFL History. This one was the obvious champion in this first game. I can see a deep run from this moment.
Game 2:
Mile High Miracle vs. Allowing Montana Pass to Taylor in SB XXIII.
Winner — Allowing the Pass.
Cool Joe is known for this significant moment in time. If Bengals get a stop in the final two-minutes they finally get their first super bowl victory, instead, they are still searching for one.
AFC South:
Game 1:
Music City Miracle vs. Watson spin out against Bills.
Winner — Music City Miracle.
The Texans haven’t been around as long as other franchises to have a huge play in their history. Watson’s play was memorable, but not as memorable as the Music City Miracle.
Game 2:
Hayden pick 6 against Chicago in Super Bowl XLI vs. Safety kickoff allowed in 1999 AFC Championship Game.
Winner — Hayden pick 6.
Really awesome matchup between these two moments here. The Jaguars were 14-2 and having the best season of their franchise until it all fell apart in the 1999 AFC Championship. Although a moment in infamy, Hayden’s pick 6 secured a Super Bowl classic, and Manning’s first title.
AFC East:
Game 1:
Malcolm Butler interception vs. Marino’s fake spike.
Winner — Malcolm Butler interception
This division was the hardest to choose from, four phenomenal moments in the history of the NFL. Al Michael’s “and the pass is intercepted at the goal line, by Malcolm Butler!” will forever be ingrained in my head. A super bowl saving play gets the win.
Game 2:
The Butt Fumble vs. Wide Right.
Winner — Wide Right
The Butt Fumble will forever be the worst play in NFL History. But, the field goal pushed right by Scott Norwood was one of four straight Super Bowl losses for Buffalo, a stretch that seems nearly impossible to top.
AFC West:
Game 1:
The Helicopter vs. Tony Martin 43-yard-touchdown catch, 1994 AFC Championship Game.
Winner — The Helicopter
Obviously John Elway’s helicopter down near the goal line was going to be the winner here. To me, one of the most overrated plays in NFL History, but it is still a memorable moment, which is why it gets the win.
Game 2:
Tuck Rule vs. 65 Toss Power Trap.
Winner — Tuck Rule
This sets up a very fun AFC West championship between the Helicopter and this moment. Woodson coming off the edge and forcing a fumble, or, I guess incomplete pass, will forever be a debate in NFL History.
Thank you to childhood and life-long friend David Havlin for the help!
