We are an hour away from rounds 4 – 7 of the NFL Draft and as I sit on my couch and scroll Twitter, I still cannot figure out what Brain Gutenkust, Matt LaFleur, and the Packers are doing.
They shocked the world Thursday night and decided to trade up to the Miami Dolphins’ 26th pick to take quarterback Jordan Love from Utah State.
Let’s took a look at who the Packers jumped: The Dolphins — who selected Tua hours before — The Seahawks — who have Russell Wilson — The Ravens — who have reigning MVP Lamar Jackson — and the Tennessee Titans, — who just extended Tannehill for four years worth $60 million.
None of those teams needed a quarterback.
Let me make this perfectly clear: THIS IS NOT 2005.
This is not the same situation as Brett Favre. This is not the same situation when they drafted Aaron Rodgers.
When Rodgers slid to 24 in 2005, he was the top quarterback prospect in the draft and somehow fell that far. Jordan Love was by no means the prospect Rodgers was, and not only that, but he wasn’t even a top 3 quarterback prospect in his own draft class.
Also, when the Packers took Rodgers to be Favre’s successor, the Packers were just SPANKED in the Wild Card round AND Brett Favre was now threatening retirement for the second straight offseason. Favre was regressing and no one knew when he was going to say good-bye to football. The next year, the Pack went 4 – 12, it was clear they needed to focus on the future.
Not only is Rodgers not threatening retirement yet, but he has been passionate about playing well into his 40’s for the past 6 – 7 years now. He also made it clear on numerous occassions that he wants to finish his career in Green Bay, that looks dim now.
The 2019 Packers are not like the 2005 Packers. Last year, the Packers were SIXETY minutes away from the Super Bowl. They needed a run stopper or another weapon for AR12. CeeDee Lamb and Justin Jefferson were falling Thursday night and they should have made a trade up for one of them, not a freaking quarterback.
Not only did they not get those stud receivers, but Lamb went to old friend Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys and Jefferson is coming to the NFC North, for the Vikings.
The front office basically just told a 13 – 3 team that they have no faith in them and that they aren’t good enough to run it back and make a push for a Super Bowl.
When the Packers traded up, stud Linebacker Patrick Queen was available. Let me remind you that the Packers gave up 220 yards rushing and 4 rushing TD’s to Raheem Mostart in the NFC Championship. Patrick Queen or even Ross Blacklock would’ve been a better selection than Jordan Love.
Not only did they mess up Thursday night, but during the 2nd and 3rd rounds, they made even more head scratching moves. With Denzel Mims dropping fast and being 3 picks away, the Packers could’ve traded up and — somewhat — give ease to Packer fans and get a first round talent WR at the back end of the 2nd round.
Nope.
They don’t trade up, lose out on Mims, and then decide to select a running back. I’ll remind everyone that the Packers currently have three running backs, and one of those men led the league in touchdowns last season, and was second in receiving yards on the roster.
THEN, they take a tight end in the 3rd round. They took a tight end in the third round last season. I usually trusted Gutey and LaFleur, but I have zero clue what they are doing here, it is atrocious to watch.
For some reason I’m going to sit down and watch rounds 4 – 7 and see what the Pack do next. It’ll be a long wait for their first pick today because they don’t have a 4th round pick, they traded it, for a god damn backup quarterback.
