“Out of the Loft, Into Reality; A Hipster Quits Williamsburg, and Gets a Haircut,” is a fascinating story about the exhilarating life, of the young Mr. Todd Fatjo.
Mr. Fatjo, as he referred to as in the story, rented an apartment in Brooklyn, more specifically, Williamsburg, for several years. In his time in this apartment, Mr. Fatjo went on to have “five parties” during his time as a tenant there. Parties that were described as “insane.”
During his time there, Mr. Fatjo had three other roommates who shared the same passion as him, music and parties. Mr. Fatjo worked at a record store and had gigs as a DJ during his time in Brooklyn. He had a large afro and was often referred to as a “hipster.”
After years of living in his apartment, which he thoroughly loved, and eventually switching jobs — he is working towards a broker’s license now — it was time for Mr. Fatjo to move out with his girlfriend and become “just some guy who has a job.” He has since left Brooklyn with his girlfriend, even though it “killed him to leave.”
The story and young life of Mr. Fatjo was fascinating to read about, and the story itself was written so eloquently. There was no time while reading it where you felt out of touch or bored from the story. I do wish there was a follow up with the life of Mr. Fatjo though.
Where is he now? Is he married? Did he reach the goal of obtaining his broker’s license? These are all the questions that could have been answered and questions that the reader deserves to know the answers to.
One other thing that would have been worth mentioning was Mr. Fatjo’s background. Did he grow up in the New York / Brooklyn area and that’s why he loved it so much? What were his parents like and did they drive him towards his passion of music? Where did he attend school?
Again, some great questions that I believe we all need answers to.
Regardless of that, the story was great and I would definitely recommend this read to someone else. At such a young age, 28 at the time the story was released, Mr. Fatjo has already lived such an exciting life, one that is worth checking out.
